Previous Step

     Previous Step

You are now employed and ready to start the next phase of your career. Following are a few tips and techniques to help along your way…..

Your First Few Months:

This is your opportunity to ask questions, observe and learn. It is also viewed by the employer as time to prove your yourself and validate the impression you gave in the interview.

Listen more than you talk. Be attentive to what more experienced employees in the company have to say before you add your opinion.

Show initiative.   If you complete an assignment or do not have work at the moment, offer to help others or ask for more.

Be punctual when you start the day, and don’t be the first to leave at the end of your work day.

Keep stories and examples of your last job and employer to a minimum, if at all.

If you don’t know the answer, or if you’re unsure how to complete a task – admit it. Be open and honest, ask questions, find out the answer.

Its ok to make a mistake – the key is to learn from it and not repeat it.   Don’t hesitate to ask questions -- as a new employee, your supervisor will appreciate the fact that you want to understand.

Be a contributor: if there is a problem, present a solution – be tactful and discreet, as you may be unaware of previous occurences or working relationships.

Ask your supervisor what his/her expectations of you are.  Discuss and ensure you both understand the steps to achieve these.

Stay clear of office politics and grapevine rumors.   Align yourself with the positive people who enjoy their work and are committed to the organization’s goals.

And beyond:

Your goal is to learn all you can, demonstrate your abilities, contribute to the team and continue to develop your skills.

Make a commitment to do everything you can to maintain a positive relationship with your supervisor.

Your first few years are about learning, enhancing your skills and applying what you have learned in school and previous positions.

It’s also about paying your dues….this means doing what many people before you have done -- proving yourself, demonstrating you have what it takes. It may also mean doing work that is not as challenging as you like, working long hours and dealing with smaller clients.

Above all, remember your attitude is the key to establishing rapport with people and to achieving career success. Without a constructive attitude, your words and image will appear false. With a genuinely positive and affirmative attitude towards others, all things become possible.
